Acoustic phonetic properties of mid vowels in New Caledonian French
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper investigates production of the mid vowels /e, ɛ, ø, œ, o, ɔ/ by four speakers of New Caledonian French (NCF). Formant and durational properties of these vowels are examined with respect to the type of syllable in which they occur. Results point to general adherence to the loi de position in NCF, such that the close-mid vowels occur in open syllables and the open-mid vowels occur in closed ones. There is, however, interspeaker variation concerning the realization of open syllable /ɛ/. There is also some evidence of /ɔ/-centralization in NCF, and of phonetically higher productions of /e/ and /o/ relative to other varieties.

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels
This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...
متن کاملDomain-initial strengthening on French vowels and phonological contrasts: Evidence from lip articulation and spectral variation
Domain-initial strengthening has primarily been studied for consonants. This paper examines whether vowels also undergo boundary-induced phonetic variation and questions how this effect interacts with phonological contrast in a dense vowel system such as that of French. The labial articulation and the acoustic properties of the 10 French oral vowels /i, e, ɛ, a, y, ø, œ, u, o, ɔ/ are examined i...
متن کاملCoarticulation and contrast: Neighborhood density conditioned phonetic variation in French
Phonological neighborhood density (ND) conditions variation in a number of acoustic phonetic properties of words. For example, previous research has shown greater hyperarticulation and greater nasal coarticulation in high-ND English words than in low-ND words. Here, we investigate the effects of ND on vowel hyperarticulation and vowel nasality (coarticulatory and contrastive) in French. Acousti...

متن کاملPerception and Production of French Close and Close - mid Rounded Vowels by Japanese - Speaking Learners
A series of 3 experiments were conducted to examine the behaviour of Japanese-speaking learners of French (JSL) concerning the perception and production of French /u/, /y/ and /ø/, compared with English-speaking learners of French, in order to examine how L2 (second language) vowels which do not have phonemic and/or phonetic equivalents in L1 (native language) are acquired by learners. The resu...
